A Vision for Kenya
Justus Ngobia had a vision to reach law students. So, he organized a FLAG event for them.
After the Uganda conference in June (see the blog post on July 19, 2018), Bob and Meg traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, to help Justus with a three-day FLAG conference for law students and a one-day FLAG conference for lawyers. They were joined by team member Pat Burroughs and two “Pepperdine Fellows” who were working in Uganda. Having a FLAG conference specifically for law students was a new approach for our FLAG team.
The first goal of the student conference was to share the FLAG core messages with the law students, helping to develop them as spiritual leaders in the legal profession. The second goal was to help the students learn how to prepare scholarly articles for law reviews. Each student participated in a group project that culminated in presentation of a proposal for an article on faith and law.
The law students were privileged to hear from several judges and justices. The first was Kenyan Court of Appeals Justice Daniel Musinga. Two FLAG leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Jonathan and Jean-Pierre, both judges with the Court of Appeals of Katanga Province, DRC, also participated in our FLAG events in Nairobi. They travelled four days each way by bus to encourage their legal brethren in Kenya!
During our time in Kenya our team participated in a special gathering of young legal professionals and in the “launch dinner” for FLAG Kenya. At that dinner, Cru’s National Director of Kenya, Arnold Nzova, spoke about the important role that FLAG Kenya has in reaching the influencers of that nation. Judges Jonathan and Jean-Pierre explained how God is using FLAG to transform the lives of legal professionals and advance true biblical justice in their country.
The two weeks spent in Uganda and Kenya were significant in laying the foundation for the future expansion of FLAG in Eastern Africa. They also gave us the opportunity to connect with leaders in the legal professions in both countries and to encourage them to use their platforms to bring the gospel message into their spheres of influence. The results are in the Lord’s hands.
